The conference committee is looking for qualified people with interesting and informative topics relevant to education leaders in Alaska to lead quality sectionals. August 31 application deadline.
NEW! DEED Announces Timeline for Release of Statewide Assessment Results
The Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (PEAKS) and Alaska Science Assessment results were made available to school districts on August 3 in advance of the September 1 public release date.
NEW! DEED eLearning Courses Available to Meet New Teacher Certification Requirements
As of June 30, 2017, a person must complete the following trainings in order to receive or renew a teacher certificate. DEED has eLearning courses available to satisfy the new requirements. 
  • Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention
  • Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention
  • Alcohol or Drug Related Disabilities
  • Suicide Awareness and Prevention
NEW! Public Comments Sought on Revised Project Delivery Method Handbook
DEED has prepared a second draft revision to the Project Delivery Method Handbook, 2nd Ed.  The publication provides guidance regarding the process for using a project delivery method other than the Design-Bid-Build established in 4 AAC 31.080. Public comment closes August 31 at 5:00 p.m.
NEW! National Youth Cyber Education Program Seeking Student Teams
CyperPatriot is a national cyber defense team competition for high school and middle school students sponsored by the Air Force Association. Teams must register by October 4.

EdSurge, in collaboration with the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, is traveling around the country to learn best practices in personalized learning from school-based education leaders.
Reminder: USDOE Seeking Input on Mandatory Civil Rights Data Collection
The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) is requesting feedback from local education agencies and other stakeholders. Comments will be accepted until August 21. USDOE is especially interested in public comment addressing the following issues:
  1. Is this collection necessary to the proper functions of the USDOE;
  2. Will this information be processed and used in a timely manner;
  3. Is the estimate of burden accurate;
  4. How might USDOE enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected; and
  5. How might USDOE minimize the burden of this collection on the respondents, including through the use of information technology.
Reminder: 2018 U.S. Senate Youth Program Selection Process Underway
Alaska high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for the merit-based program, which includes a paid, week-long visit to Washington, D.C. and a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship.
Reminder: IMLS Accepting Applications for National Leadership and LB21 Librarian Grants
The NLG program invests in projects that address challenges faced by the library and archive fields and generate results such as new tools, research findings, or models that can be widely used. The LB21 program supports human capital capacity projects for libraries and archives. This call for preliminary proposals has a deadline of September 1, 2017, for both programs.

DEED is offering a federal partnership grant for teacher/administrator professional development. Deadline to apply is 4 p.m. on August 31. Contact Bjorn Wolter for more information.
Reminder: Early Registration for CTE Conference Open until September 15
This year’s premier annual gathering of CTE professionals at Alaska’s ACTE Professional Development Conference takes place October 30 to November 1 in downtown Anchorage.
Alaska Signed On for Congressional App Challenge
The Congressional App Challenge (CAC) runs July 26 – November 1. The CAC is a public effort to encourage kids to learn how to code, through annual district-wide competitions hosted by Members of Congress for their district. Please encourage your students to enter!
