Last call! DEED Alaska Developmental Profile (ADP) Webinar Happening August 28
The ADP is required by state law to be completed for all students entering kindergarten or students entering first grade who did not attend a public kindergarten by November 1, 2017.

Last call! Public Comments Sought on Revised Project Delivery Method Handbook
DEED has prepared a second draft revision to the Project Delivery Method Handbook, 2nd Ed.  The publication provides guidance regarding the process for using a project delivery method other than the Design-Bid-Build established in 4 AAC 31.080. Public comment closes August 31 at 5:00 p.m.

NEW! Office of Children’s Services Announces New Child Abuse Reporting Hotline
The new centralized Child Abuse Reporting Hotline has gone LIVE, with one number and email address for the whole state: 1-800-478-4444 and Additionally, in partnership with the Children’s Justice Act Task force and others, a new online training for mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect has been created.
NEW! Historic Alaska Newspapers Now Available Online
Alaska’s first batch of digitized historic newspapers has gone live on Chronicling America! Researchers can now search through Alaska newspapers dated 1898-1921, online, free!

2018 U.S. CTE Presidential Scholars Selection Process Underway

2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Selection Process Underway
Nominate an exemplary high school senior from your district by November 1 at 4pm. Alaska can nominate up to 10 male and 10 female exemplary high school seniors. Contact Bjorn Wolter for more information.
2018 U.S. Senate Youth Program Selection Process Underway
Alaska high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for the merit-based program, which includes a paid, week-long visit to Washington, D.C. and a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship. Alaska application deadline is November 1 at 4pm. Contact Bjorn Wolter for more information.
DEED eLearning Courses Available to Meet New Teacher Certification Requirements
As of June 30, 2017, a person must complete the following trainings in order to receive or renew a teacher certificate. DEED has eLearning courses available to satisfy the new requirements. 
  • Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention
  • Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention
  • Alcohol or Drug Related Disabilities
  • Suicide Awareness and Prevention
John Conwell Named 2018 Alaska Superintendent of the Year
The Alaska Superintendents Association (ASA) announced Unalaska City School District’s John Conwell as Alaska’s 2018 Superintendent of the Year. Superintendent Conwell has committed decades of service to the Unalaska City School District, serving ten years as assistant principal and principal for Unalaska High School, and is currently in his eleventh year as the district’s superintendent.
