To ensure that Alaska’s state plan is aligned with what Alaskans value, DEED is seeking additional public comment on the final draft. DEED will gather public comment through September 15. 
Last call! Alaska Space Grant Program Offering Undergraduate Student Scholarships
These stipends are offered to students majoring in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics (STEM) fields. Stipends available under this announcement are limited to students attending Alaska institutions of higher education. September 15 application deadline.

The State Board of Education will meet on September 14 and 15 in the first-floor board room at 801 West 10th Street in Juneau. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. on September 14 and 9:00 a.m. on September 15.

Statewide, district, school, and subgroup level results from the Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools (PEAKS) assessment are now available online.
NEW! AdvancED Workshop for schools preparing for their Engagement Reviews this year and next
The AdvancED Alaska Operations Office is hosting a one-day work session on Saturday, October 21 (the day before the Principal’s Conference) for schools and school systems to learn about the new AdvancED Continuous Improvement System (CIS), focusing on its tools and resources. Participants can earn up to two UAA credits (EDL 590 level). Please email Tim with questions.

Reminder: Canada C3 Expedition to Visit Alaskan Schools in September
As part of Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation, the Canada C3 Expedition is sailing the length of Canada’s coasts and Alaska. The expedition will stop in five Alaskan communities (Pt. Hope, Shishmaref, Nome, St. Paul, and Unalaska), and visit schools to celebrate the culture, science, geography and art of the northern region. Excellent curriculum can be found at the expedition Digital Classroom and video library.
Reminder: Dept. of Admin Releases Health Care Authority (HCA) Study Reports
As required under SB74, the reports evaluate the feasibility of an HCA in Alaska. A key recommendation in reports is the creation of an HCA with an initial focus on the purchasing and administration of public employee health insurance. A 60-day public comment period opens today. Informational webinars are being held September 7, 11, and 13.
Reminder: Wasilla Public Library Looking to Bring Astronomer Kevin Manning to Alaska
Wasilla Public Library and Anchorage Municipal Libraries are looking at bringing up astronomer Kevin Manning, who provides a great presentation for all ages complete with giant telescope. Kevin has blocked out October 21 – November 11 for Alaska dates. Celebrate successes – nominate yourself or someone else to receive a Success Story award for any success related to school health. Winners receive full scholarships to the 12th Annual School Health & Wellness Institute. September 29 application deadline.
DEED Announces Finalists for 2018 Teacher of the Year
Kent Fielding, Karen Martin, Eric Rush, and Ben Walker are the finalists for the 2018 Alaska Teacher of the Year.
FREE Resource: Biomass-Heated Greenhouse Handbook
The handbook, produced by Alaska Energy Authority, is geared for Alaskan schools and community organizations. Inspiration for the handbook comes from Alaskan schools already using biomass-heated greenhouses.
Office of Children’s Services Announces New Child Abuse Reporting Hotline
The new centralized Child Abuse Reporting Hotline has gone LIVE, with one number and email address for the whole state: 1-800-478-4444 and Additionally, in partnership with the Children’s Justice Act Task force and others, a new online training for mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect has been created.

This year’s premier annual gathering of CTE professionals at Alaska’s ACTE Professional Development Conference takes place October 30 to November 1 in downtown Anchorage.
2018 U.S. CTE Presidential Scholars Selection Process Underway
Nominate an exemplary CTE high school senior from your district by November 1 at 4pm. Alaska can nominate up to five exemplary high school seniors.
2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Selection Process Underway
Nominate an exemplary high school senior from your district by November 1 at 4pm. Alaska can nominate up to 10 male and 10 female exemplary high school seniors.
2018 U.S. Senate Youth Program Selection Process Underway
Alaska high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for the merit-based program, which includes a paid, week-long visit to Washington, D.C. and a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship. Alaska application deadline is November 1 at 4pm.
