Alaska Society for Technology in Education (ASTE) Conference 2023

ASTE 2023 will be at the Hotel Captain Cook on February 18-22nd! The ASTE Board for 2022-2023, under the direction of President, Bill Burr, has selected Education Rewired as our theme. The idea is to reignite the spark in education and reinvent, redefine, and reimagine the work we do. The image we want our participants to picture is one where education across the globe was stretched and flattened. We entered the wormhole one way, but we are going to come out the other side in a new dimension that is better than we could have imagined. We want our attendees to ignite that spark that led them to become an educator. Our attendees will leave feeling reignited, passionate, and reenergized!

The Call for Proposal to Present is open through October 1, 2022. Registration will open after the schedule is finalized so participants can register and sign up for sessions at the same time. Interested vendors/exhibitors should contact director@aste.org.

Alaska Contemporary Art Bank: 2023 Call for Art

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is requesting applications of visual artwork to purchase for the Alaska Contemporary Art Bank. Alaskan artists are invited to submit up to 6 recent works in any media. Purchased works become part of a lending collection displayed throughout state public areas. Only works priced at under $4,000 will be considered. Submission deadline is 9:59 PM AKT, March 31, 2023.

Alaska Artistic License Plate: 2023 Call for Art

The Alaska State Council on the Arts invites artists of all ages to submit their design for the 2023 Artistic License Plate Competition. The winning design will be distributed and sold at DMVS across the state through 2027. The spirit of this competition is to encourage creativity, celebrate our unique experiences living in Alaska, and highlight the importance of engaging with art in our daily lives. ASCA administers this competition in keeping with their mission to advance creativity as a core civic value and identity for Alaska. Semi-finalists will receive a $250 honorarium, and the selected artist will be awarded $1000. Additionally, applicants under the age of 18 are eligible for a $50 honorarium, awarded by grade level. Submission deadline is 9:59 PM AKT, March 31, 2023.

The Alaska Arts Education Consortium invites registration for the 2023 Administrator Arts Retreat in Kodiak March 30-21, 2023. The Administrator Arts Retreat is designed for Principals and District Office Leaders, and is hosted by the Kodiak Island Borough School District, in partnership with the Alaska Arts Education Consortium, and with support from the Munartet Project and The Alaska Comprehensive Literacy Development Project. Priority will be given to administrators of schools on the DEED Comprehensive Support and Improvement list. This two-day session addresses a common need to improve student engagement with learning that leads to positive outcomes, in alignment with school improvement efforts. It is designed to increase local impact by arming administrators with effective strategies to meet their needs, interests and experience levels in order to amplify learning in and through the arts and cultures. KIBSD’s Munartet Program will cover the cost of lodging for the first 15 registrants from off Kodiak Island. We will have information about lodging deals coming soon. The Core Purpose of AlaskaCAN is to advocate for Alaskans to pursue postsecondary workforce development pathways. This year's Conference theme, Moving Forward Together, builds on the shared vision of Alaska’s education and workforce stakeholders – if we are to find ways to improve postsecondary attainment and workforce readiness in Alaska, we must do so together! The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is a U.S. government program run by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program to help low-income households pay for internet service and connected devices like a laptop or tablet.

You are likely eligible if your household’s income is below 200% of the Federal Poverty Line, or if you or someone you live with currently receives a government benefit like SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, WIC, Pell Grant, or Free and Reduced-Price Lunch.

SERRC Hiring Rural Empowerment Specialist for Successful School Improvement

A cohort of five schools is working with DEED, R16CC, and SERRC on a new three-year school improvement plan process. The Rural Empowerment for School Improvement engages the school and community in addressing student needs within the local context. Enhanced Learning Maps Project helps students personalize path the student success

Enhanced Learning Maps provide standards-focused materials that foster the conditions for improving student achievement, including online tools deliberately designed to support and inform personalized learning.

These tools encourage interactions that elicit evidence of student thinking, leading to conversations that engage students and teachers in formative assessment processes.

Resource Manual for Transitioning from Secondary to Postsecondary Education for Students with Disabilities

Lee Waters, Ed.D. with the Anchorage School District in collaboration with the UAA Center for Human Development LEND Without Walls has created a manual to assist all those involved with the education of students with disabilities. This manual is designed to be a helpful resource for anyone involved with the transitional needs of students with disabilities from secondary to postsecondary education. Girls Who Code at Home Activities

Girls Who Code releases free computer science activities for students, educators, and parents on Mondays. Some online, some offline, of varying levels of difficulty. Each activity features a woman in tech who pioneered innovative technology.

Awareness Materials on Family and Youth Homelessness

As a result of the pandemic, and without the usual methods of outreach and identification, many families and youth experiencing homelessness may be even more disconnected from school and early childhood programs. The SchoolHouse Connection created PSAs and a social media toolkit to help raise awareness and provide information around educational rights.

Online Story Circles for Educators and Community Members

Educator Story Circles are opportunities for small groups of people (educators and engaged community members) to gather together to listen and share thoughts and stories related to a common theme. No preparation is necessary, and each participant has the option to share or simply listen to others. Story Circles aren’t about performing. Rather, the purpose is to listen and connect. Participants who want to lead Story Circles with their own students or community members will have access to a free toolkit and will be eligible for a $200 stipend from the Alaska Humanities Forum.

ACPE’s Master the FAFSA Training

ACPE’s Master the FAFSA Training provides a line-by-line overview and detailed explanation of the 2025-26 FAFSA process. Education and Workforce Development Professionals gain better understanding and navigation of the FAFSA form to ensure they can support Alaska’s students/families and adult learners with successful FAFSA completion.

ACPE’s Master the FAFSA Training sessions are delivered weekly, on Mondays and Thursdays, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a series of training sessions. Weekly ACPE’s Master the FAFSA Training sessions are separate sessions that cover exactly the same material. Individuals only need to register and attend one session; however, multiple sessions are available to accommodate a variety of schedules.

Single Sign-on with Clever Rostering

Students are accessing their AKCIS Personal Learning & Career Plans (PLCPs) using single sign-on through Clever. This means students do not have to remember their usernames and passwords, and teachers and counselors save time on the data management side. Clever authenticates student credentials between the district SIS and AKCIS. Clever is available to schools for free, including complimentary tech support. Alaska Reads Act Implementation Webinars

Through May, DEED is hosting weekly hour-long webinars to take a deeper dive into the Alaska Reads Act. The webinars will focus on each of the four programmatic parts of the Alaska Reads Act, as well teacher certification, data collections, and application to world and Alaska Language programs. Multiple webinars are also scheduled which will be dedicated entirely for Q&A and clarification. These webinars are open to the public but will be tailored to educators leading implementation efforts in each district or school. Each webinar is scheduled for 3:15-4:15 PM. Science of Reading Leadership Course (NWEA)

In partnership with NWEA® and Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education® (CORE®), the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) will offer a joint learning, collaboration, and coaching opportunity that will empower 50 Alaska education leaders to understand effective literacy instruction. The leadership course will provide participants with fundamental knowledge in effective standards-aligned and research-based reading instruction and assessment practices for all learners to support their school and district plans in the science of reading, as required by the Alaska Reads Act. Keys to Literacy

Keys to Literacy is an approved provider by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development to provide a free professional development course that meets the requirements of the Alaska Reads Act.

Between February and May, 2023, Alaska PreK-Grade 3 educators can participate in a hybrid-online course titled Keys to Beginning Reading that totals 48.5 hours. Participants spend approximately 36 hours completing modules in an asynchronous online course and attend five, half-day, virtual-live meetings facilitated by Keys to Literacy trainers (totaling 12.5 hours). The course is organized into five sections — participants complete a 6 to 8 hour section of the online course prior to attending a half-day, virtual-live meeting that addresses the content of that part of the course. The meetings are scheduled between February and May, 2023 with 2 to 3 weeks between each meeting. Participants access the self-paced online course content via readings, videos, quizzes, and reflection activities. Assessment Literacy Professional Development

Want to improve your understanding of assessment? Want to learn more about how you can make assessment a better tool for improving classroom learning outcomes? The DEED Assessment Literacy courses begin this week week and are targeted at deepening educator understanding of Assessment data. Courses are offered remotely during after school hours. Attend a series of courses and work with the Professional Learning Coordinator to earn UA credit for your commitment. If you attended sessions in the fall, you can still earn credit. New Content Available for Safe Children’s Act Curriculum

The Alaska Safe Children’s Act (informally known as Erin’s and Bree’s Law) requires schools to cover the topics of child sexual abuse and teen dating violence. DEED created a curriculum in response to legislative action. This curriculum is for students in grades 7 through 12 and is called Bree’s Law Education. It meets the full requirements for student training under the Alaska Safe Children’s Act, including requirements for Bree’s Law and Erin’s Law. There are now two versions of the curriculum (A and B) for each grade band. The two versions allow the curricula to be used in consecutive years providing variety in the lessons and scenarios while covering the same content. Alaska Developmental Profile Results Available

Late last month, DEED released results for the Alaska Developmental Profile (ADP), the assessment used to provide a snapshot of each child’s development when they enter school.

The ADP assess 13 goals across five domains of development.

Statewide in 2022, just under 32% of kindergartners consistently demonstrated 11 of 13 goals, while just under 19% of kindergartners consistently demonstrated all 13 goals.

Demonstrating phonological awareness is the goal which the fewest kindergartners met, with only 39% consistently demonstrating that skill.

The Alaska Developmental Profile is required as part of the statewide comprehensive system of student assessments, 4 AAC 06.712. The ADP documents what students know and do which is used to inform practice and instruction as well as statewide policy.

School Health Echo Series Underway

School Health ECHO is a statewide virtual learning network intended for professionals in the education setting to interface with a team of medical and education experts in Alaska. The School Health series is focused on health considerations, answering questions related to educational and school settings, and establishing a safe school environment. Each session will include public health announcements and updates, a brief presentation followed by Q&A, and guided discussion or case presentation as an integral part of the learning experience. If you were registered for previous School Health ECHO series, you must register again for this new series to obtain Zoom access to the sessions. Click here to register.

Volunteer Opportunity: SERRC’s Alaska Decathlon Seeks Essay Readers

The Academic Decathlon is a rigorous scholastic program that challenges high school students in ten different subjects based on a yearly theme. Here in Alaska, this program engages 200+ students from more than 20 communities. We're looking for volunteers to read and grade essays from the comfort of their own homes using a national rubric and easy-to-use online system. There are multiple opportunities to read essays (scrimmages and state competitions) with the biggest need starting the week of January 9th. All volunteers are trained during a short, online, training session on how to use the grading system and rubric.

Provided by ACPE and Alaska 529, the I Know I Can story, and educational activities are available for FREE for educators and families to share with 1^st-3^rd grade students. Individual books and program materials can be delivered to schools PLUS a digital download, student activities and family tips are also available online. Virtual or in-person events connect volunteers with classrooms to read and discuss the story. Discussions include social-emotional concepts, early career exploration, and the importance of academics and healthy habits for strong, vibrant communities and personal growth. Students are encouraged to draw pictures of how they want to help their community when they get older, and complete related educational activities. (Flexible grade levels.)

Provided by ACPE and Alaska 529, the FREE 5^th-8^th grade Kids2College program is available for classroom & distance delivery, and includes six lessons, 1-hr each with customizable PowerPoint presentations, video or virtual college & career panels, virtual campus events & tours, and printed or digital student workbooks and teacher guides. Students identify career interests and build personal learning and career plans; learn how to best prepare for college and career training; and learn about college entrance exams, admissions, financial aid, and the different forms of postsecondary education. FAFSA Wednesdays

To meet the needs of students and families who may not be able to receive FAFSA assistance within the hours of operation of the ACPE Success Center, we have introduced weekly evening assistance via FAFSA Wednesdays.

Alaska Developmental Profile Results Available

Late last month, DEED released results for the Alaska Developmental Profile (ADP), the assessment used to provide a snapshot of each child’s development when they enter school.

The ADP assess 13 goals across five domains of development.

Statewide in 2022, just under 32% of kindergartners consistently demonstrated 11 of 13 goals, while just under 19% of kindergartners consistently demonstrated all 13 goals.

Demonstrating phonological awareness is the goal which the fewest kindergartners met, with only 39% consistently demonstrating that skill.

State Board of Education & Early Development Meeting December 7-9

The Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development will hold a regular quarterly meeting and a professional development workshop on December 7 & 8, 2022, in Anchorage, Alaska. The board meeting will be held at the Anchorage School District, 5530 E Northern Lights Blvd. Public participation for the meeting will be in person and through the digital platform Zoom. The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. on December 7, 2022, and the quarterly board meeting will begin on December 8, 2022, at 9:00 a.m.

The board will take public comment on agenda and non-agenda items starting at approximately 9:10 a.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2022. Oral comment is limited to three minutes per person and five minutes per group. The Alaska Staff Development Network (ASDN) is a division of the Alaska Council of School Administrators (ACSA). ASDN serves educators and school districts across the State of Alaska by providing professional learning opportunities. ASDN also serves as a grant partner to a portfolio of state and federal grant projects.

With direction from the Executive Director and ACSA/ASDN Grants Director, the ACSA/ASDN Grant Manager position provides high quality grant management services under existing contracts, collaboratively develops new grant proposals, and provides support to other ASDN and ACSA programs.

The successful candidate will also work with ASDN to grow our statewide professional learning networks, both online in person. This includes supporting the development of future professional learning with a statewide perspective and building connections across ASDN’s grant projects and professional learning programs.

Smithsonian K-12 Science Education Action Planning Institute

The Smithsonian K-12 Science Education Action Planning Institute will be held online July 25-27, 2022. This institute will bring together subject matter experts, formal and non-formal educators, school administrators, and educational researchers to dive deeply into three timely, important topics facing STEM education:

What does innovation look like in K-12 STEM education in 2022?
How do we meet the needs of our students and educators by elevating diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI) in STEM education?
How can STEM Education for Sustainable Development (STEM4SD) prepare our students for a changing planet?

The Smithsonian Science Education Center will convene experts in each of these areas to explore actionable approaches, backed by research and best practices in science, engineering, and education. Through this institute, participants will engage with the Smithsonian’s action planning process, and build out a plan to take action in their own context on one or all of these topics.

This institute is designed for educators, parents, community members, and industry stakeholders dedicated to providing high quality K-12 teaching and learning for all. Participants can attend as individuals or teams with members of their school, district or organization.

FCC Affordable Connectivity Program for Households

The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more. The benefit provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.

Anonymous Reporting Systems and Wellness Programs available to districts AT NO COST

SERRC is partnering with STOPit Solutions, one of the nation’s leading experts in school safety, to bring its Anonymous Reporting System (ARS) and SEL & Compliance Training Center (SCTC) to 65,000 students across Alaska for three years at no cost. STOPit delivers their programs to over 6,000 districts nationwide and serves millions of students and staff. Their programs have helped save and change the lives of thousands. Their CEO and school teams are from Sandy Hook Promise – so they understand the needs of schools and constraints they face.

The combined programs teach and empower students, staff, and administrators to recognize and anonymously report safety, misconduct, and compliance concerns BEFORE they escalate into a crisis while also providing curriculum to educate and help prevent such concerns from ever occurring. Funding is being provided through the Stop School Violence Act – a Department of Justice grant awarded to SERRC.

DEED Welcomes Coding and Computer Science Career Coordinator

In August DEED welcomed Faye Tanner as the Statewide Coding and Computer Science Career Coordinator. This position was created to develop and improve software engineering and computer science education programs in Alaska, and to partner with programs and institutions that prepare Alaska’s students for fulfilling careers in fields like coding, cybersecurity, telecommunications infrastructure engineering and network engineering.

Prior to joining DEED, Tanner worked in the computer industry focusing on both hardware and software development and has taught computer science at the post-secondary level, and has held STEM classes for K-12 students in public and homeschool settings.

Increasing career, technical, and culturally relevant education to meet student and workforce needs is one of the five strategic priorities of Alaska’s Education Challenge. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were over 1.6 million jobs for software developments in 2021, with a median pay of more than $109,000. The field is expected to grow 25% between 2020 and 2030.

“Computer science is driving innovation in almost every sector of the US economy,” Tanner said. “Findings show that over 80% of software engineers are currently working remotely full time, and working from home is becoming the new normal work arrangement. All of these present to our students tremendous career opportunities with competitive pay while they continue to live and thrive in the communities that they and many generations before them grew up in.”

Alaska’s Computer Science Standards were adopted in 2019.

“At the beginning of the standard it states that there is ‘an urgent need’ for improvement in computer science education in K-12 to help students become the ‘creators of computing technology,’” Tanner said. “I believe that we need all the help we can get, and all our efforts would be one of the best investments that we can make in Alaska’s students.”

U.S. Senate Youth Program Scholarships

The Department of Education & Early Development is soliciting applications for the U.S. Senate Youth Program—a national program sponsored by the Federal Senate and underwritten by the Hearst Foundation. It is open to juniors and seniors who hold elected positions in student government during 2022-2023 academic year. Students must be enrolled in a public or private school. State delegates will have outstanding leadership qualities and a strong commitment to public service. They generally rank in the one percent of their states academically.

Each delegate receives a $10,000 undergraduate scholarship and will participate in the USSYP Washington Week in Washington, D.C., March 4-11, 2023, where two Alaska students will join 102 other delegates for an intensive educational program about the workings of the Senate and the federal government overall.

Applications are due by 4 p.m. November 1, 2022. The application packet is attached to this email.

Special notes:

Principals must sign the application form at the bottom. Forms submitted without an original signature will not be considered valid.

Official transcripts must be sent by either the school principal, registrar, or counselor directly to the program coordinator. Transcripts must include an unweighted GPA. DEED will not calculate this for your students and failure to include it may result in the application being denied.

Each school can recommend only one applicant. If a principal expect interest from multiple students, they will need to do some internal decision making about who’s name to forward.

Applicants must be either juniors or seniors.
The Hearst Foundation provides a scholarship of $10,000 to each state delegate.
If selected to represent the state, the nominee must be available to attend the entire Washington Week from March 4-11, 2023. If held in person, travel to Washington, D.C., accommodations, and food is provided to delegates free of charge by the Hearst Foundations.

National Assessment Governing Board is Seeking Board Members

The National Assessment Governing Board sets policy for the nation’s largest ongoing assessment of what U.S. students know and can do—the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation’s Report Card. The Governing Board identifies subjects to be tested, determines the content and achievement levels for each assessment, approves test questions, and pursues innovative ways to make NAEP results more meaningful and relevant to the public. Candidates can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else. Nominations must be submitted online. American Revolution & The New Nation - Alaska Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon's 2022-2023 Theme

It's a great year to start an Academic Decathlon (high school) or Pentathlon (middle school) team! Not only is this year's theme relevant and timely, the programs award more than $50,000 in scholarships along with partnering with the UA system to offer college credit for high school students.

The Alaska Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon are among the premier scholastic competitions on both the state and national level. Aligned with National Standards and Alaska’s Educational Challenge, the curriculum for both programs transfer across core content areas to increase student performance in Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and the Arts (other subjects for high school students include Economics, Essay, Speech and Interview).

Alaska Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon secures $49,000 in scholarships for School Year 2022-2023

The Alaska Academic Decathlon and Pentathlon - programs of SERRC, Alaska's Educational Resource Center - recently partnered with Alaska 529 and the University of Alaska to award $49,000 in scholarships to students participating in this program. Scholarships are awarded by merit and by coach recommendations with specific allocations for rural students. The program also offers college credit to high school students and free curriculum to new teams!

Aligned with National Standards and Alaska's Educational Challenge, the Academic Decathlon (high school) and Pentathlon (middle school) provide small group learning opportunities where students challenge themselves as individuals and as an integral part of a team. Both programs engage students of varying skills and GPA levels, both as individuals as they study five (Pentathlon) and ten (Decathlon) subjects based on a yearly theme (2022-2023 Theme: The American Revolution: A Birth of a New Nation). High school students will immerse themselves with the Social Science, Science, Math, Economics, Literature, Art and Music for this time period along with writing essays, engaging in mock interviews and writing and delivering prepared and impromptu speeches. Middle School students will explore the Literature, Math, Science, Social Science and Fine Arts of the time period along with writing an essay based on this year's book, Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson.

SERRC Hiring Empowerment Specialist

The Empowerment Specialist is a grant-funded, contractor position designed to support the intensive needs of a Comprehensive Support and Improvement School (CSI). This position will collaborate and work closely with the Region 16 Comprehensive Center (R16CC) and the School Recognition and Support Team at the Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) to support District leadership, school site leadership and teachers, and its community members. The Empowerment Specialist is the liaison between all key
stakeholders and helps strengthen already established relationships and perhaps build new relationships between DEED, the school, and its community. The Empowerment Specialist will utilize the Four Domains for Rapid School Improvement to improve teacher practices that will increase student academic achievement.

This contracted, non-benefit position is through June 30, 2023 with possibility for contract renewal annually. Expected part-time position average is 40 hours/month and full-time positions may be considered. A travel stipend is accessible. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2022. The Department of Education and Early Development, Facilities section has recently released the following new and revised publications, which are available through the Facilities’ Publications and Resources page.

Alaska School Design and Construction Standards (1^st Edition; April 2022). This publication provides cost-effective construction standards for consistency in administering state aid through debt reimbursement and grants under AS 14.11 for construction, rehabilitation, and improvement of schools and education-related facilities.
Capital Project Administration Handbook (3^rd Edition; April 2022). This publication provides guidance on the department’s requirements for capital improvement project administration to ensure that the implementation of the project complies with school construction statutes and the regulations.
Program Demand Cost Model (21^st Edition; May 2022) and instructions. The Cost Model can be used to develop concept-level estimates for new construction or renovation projects.

The Department of Education and Early Development has released the FY2024 Capital Improvement Project (CIP) application and support materials, as approved by the Bond Reimbursement and Grant Review Committee. The CIP materials and other publications and resources to support school district capital projects are available on the Facilities’ CIP Application and Support page. Applications for FY2024 CIP grant funding must be postmarked by September 1, 2022.

DEED Final FY23 Capital Improvement Project Grant Rankings Available

DEED’s final FY2023 priority lists of district-submitted CIP grant applications for school construction and major maintenance projects are now available. Priority lists are used by the department, governor, and legislature to determine school construction and major maintenance projects for capital funding during the upcoming budget cycle.

Alaska K-12 Education COVID-Relief Funding Dashboard Now Available

The Alaska K-12 Education COVID-19 Federal Relief Funding Dashboard includes information on funding for individual districts, DEED, the Office of the Governor, and non-public schools. Information on the dashboard includes award amounts and expenditures, timelines of funding availability, and project descriptions.

In addition to the funding dashboards, DEED created a new webpage for COVID relief funding resources. The COVID Relief Funding Resources page will help both school districts and the public find health resources, funding resources, and considerations for school closures.

DEED adds Understanding Homelessness and Dyslexia eLearning modules

DEED is proud to announce the release of two new eLearning modules- Understanding Homelessness and Dyslexia.

Understanding Homelessness (30 minutes)

This course helps educators learn how to identify children and youth who meet the definition of homeless, the services available to help students and families, and understand the educational rights of students experiencing homelessness. For information about the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, please contact Cecilia Miller at Cecilia.miller@alaska.gov.

Dyslexia (45 minutes)

In this course you will have the opportunity to build on your understanding of the specific learning disability, dyslexia. This course identifies effective, evidence-based strategies for reading, outlines reading instruction essentials, and provides ideas for classroom supports to implement with students with dyslexia. Assessment & Data Literacy Training

Alaska’s System of Academic Readiness (AK STAR) gives educators insights that can help improve student learning. Beginning November 30 and continuing into 2022, teachers, teacher leaders, coaches and administrators are invited to join professional learning sessions available for free that will equip educators to make the most of assessments. Workshop and seminars will range from “Basics of MAP Growth” to “Balanced Assessment Systems for Leaders.” A full course catalog is available online. One college credit is available for educators participating in at least six sessions.

DEED adds e-Learning course on teen vaping in Alaska

Did you know almost 50% of Alaska youth have tried e-cigarettes? E-cigarettes (also called “vapes”) are highly addictive, contain toxic materials and harm brain development. Luckily, Alaska educators can make a big difference in helping youth and young adults quit – and prevent them from starting smoking in the first place. A new e-Learning course for educators about e-cigarette use among Alaska teens provides information about health harms, helps identify various types of products, teaches how to prevent use, and shares resources for schools, parents, and teens. Overcoming Anxiety and Stress in Alaskan Schools

Covid-19 has had a profound effect on all Alaskans. We have seen an increase in anxiety and stress in students, staff and families. In response, DEED created a new eLearning course to help Alaskans navigate and manage stress and anxiety. When we successfully manage these emotions, we can harness their power to be successful. But toxic levels of stress and anxiety can have significant impacts on our well-being. Both teachers and students are susceptible. In this course, you will learn ways to help students manage stress and anxiety—methods you can also use yourself.

Alaska Science Assessment Item Review

The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) is recruiting educators to participate in an Item Review to establish test items for the spring 2023 Alaska Science Assessment.

This is an opportunity for educators to become involved in the assessment item development process. Educators will review potential test items and provide feedback. This feedback will inform and enrich the process of developing items for Alaska’s assessments. Participants must have experience teaching science in grades 5, 8, or 10, be knowledgeable in the K-12 Science Standards for Alaska, and work well as part of a team. The review will be held in Anchorage on October 3-4. Participants’ travel to and from Anchorage will be covered as well as lodging, daily per diem, and a daily stipend, if eligible. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will also be awarded. Educators should apply by completing the Interested Applicant Survey by September 16.

Youth Nominations Sought for Summer of Heros

Alaska Communications and Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska are seeking youth heroes who make a positive difference in their Alaska community. Up to six selected youth each will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship through Alaska 529 and given special recognition in their local communities. Anyone can nominate a young hero in their life. Tell us about a child or teen, age 6-18, who is improving life for those around them. Whether it was to support others during the pandemic or an ongoing effort. Our goal is to shine a spotlight on youth who are doing good around us. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to nominate Alaska youth by submitting a nomination form by June 17. In addition to providing youth scholarships and recognition, the Summer of Heroes program also supports leading youth development programs. Through the pandemic, Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska worked diligently, and creatively employed non-traditional methods, to ensure youth were getting the support they need. In appreciation of their efforts, Alaska Communications pledges to donate $25 to Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska for every new residential or business internet connection between April 15 and June 17, 2022, up to $15,000 total.

Book Donations Sought for Read on the Fly

Read On the Fly, an organization that provides books for children to read while traveling by air in Alaska, is seeking book donations for children from birth through age 18. Read on the Fly started in 2016 with six shelves at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and now has shelves in Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan, Valdez, and Bethel, with plans to return the program to Kenai after an airport remodel. The premise is to provide children with access to books while traveling to encourage them to pick up a book to read rather than an electronic device before, during, or after a flight. Donated books are vetted, tagged, and distributed by Read on the Fly Volunteers, and children are welcome to keep their chosen book after their trip. Books can be donated in Anchorage at any Kaladi Brothers Coffee store, or directly contacting founder Erin Kirkland and e.kirkland0@gmail.com

ACPE Launches Enhanced Education Refinance Loan Program for Student Loan Borrowers

To better address the challenges of student loan debt in Alaska, the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE) introduces an enhanced Education Refinance Loan program (REFI). Through ACPE’s enhanced REFI loan program, borrowers have the opportunity to refinance their current private, state, and federal education loans into one loan with a repayment term of their choosing. Applicants may select a repayment term of 5, 10, or 15 years, through a convenient and secure online application process. Offering fixed interest rates ranging from 3.55% to 5.00%, one simplified lower monthly payment, no origination fee, or pre-payment penalties, ACPE’s REFI program offers Alaskans a way to lower their monthly expenses and save their hard-earned money.

Alaskans interested in saving money and refinancing their outstanding education loans are encouraged to visit ACPE’s REFI loan site (acpe.alaska.gov/LOANS/Refinance-Loan) to review these program enhancements and submit their application.

ACPE Releases the Alaska Performance Scholarship Program Review and Recommendations Report

The Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education has published a report reviewing 10 years of the Alaska Performance Scholarship, including recommendations to improve the program. The report was created by McKinley Research (formerly McDowell Group). ACPE is developing an action plan to address the recommendations laid out in the report. ACPE welcomes questions and feedback. ACPE to continue suspension on testing requirement for Alaska Performance Scholarship

To preserve student access to the Alaska Performance Scholarship, and at the direction of the Alaska Department of Law, ACPE will continue to administratively suspend the APS testing requirements for Alaska’s 2021 high school graduates. Alaska Health Warning: Fentanyl

Schools can support families by sharing messages about the dangers of opioids, especially fentanyl.

Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Illicit fentanyl is commonly mixed with other illegal drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine or counterfeit pills made to look like prescription drugs. It comes in a variety of forms, including pills, powder, chunks or rocks, and liquids. A new and particularly troubling form is rainbow-colored fentanyl in chunks or pills that look like candy. Students, staff and families should know that a very small amount of fentanyl can cause an overdose. Just one pill or a tiny amount can be fatal.

The Alaska Department of Health has issued a new Alaska Health Warning to help alert Alaskans about this danger.

North Slope Borough School District Teacher Named 2023 Alaska Teacher of the Year

On August 30, the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development announced that Harlee Harvey at Tikiġaq School in Point Hope has been named the 2023 Alaska Teacher of the Year.

Harvey is a 2014 graduate of the UAF School of Education and has earned her Masters degree with the American College of Education. She has been teaching at Tikiġaq School in the North Slope Borough School District since 2014. She has taught both first and fifth grade. Harvey has been involved with numerous staff development programs and extracurricular activities for students including the Inupiaq Spelling Bee, Battle of the Books, and is a Mapkuk Mentor for the North Slope Borough School District’s cultural curriculum project. Harvey’s classroom environment and instruction is centered on culturally responsive practices. Her peers commend her for her knowledge and respect of the Inupiaq culture. Similarly, her decision to make Point Hope her home and become involved in the community outside of the classroom has helped earn her respect and facilitates connecting with students.
