Alaska Alternate Assessments

Alaska Alternate Assessments are designed for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. These assessments are based on the grade-level content covered by the general assessment, but at reduced depth, breadth, and complexity. These assessments describe achievement based on what is determined to be high expectations for these students. Students with significant cognitive disabilities have a disability or multiple disabilities that significantly impact intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior.


DLM English Language Arts & Mathematics

The Dynamic Learning Maps™ (DLM®) Alternate Assessment System is Alaska’s Alternate Assessment for students with signification cognitive disabilities. DLM is led by the Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation (CETE) through Kansas University’s Achievement and Assessment Institute. The team at CETE includes experts from a wide range of assessment fields, as well as key partners, and is dedicated to ensuring that all students have the best possible testing experience in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Students taking the DLM Alternate Assessment require extensive, direct instruction and substantial supports to achieve measurable gains. These students learn academic content aligned to grade level content standards, but at reduced depth, breadth, and complexity. The content standards, derived from college and career readiness standards, are called the Essential Elements (EE) and are the learning targets for the assessments for grades 3-10 in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics.

Alaska Science Alternate Assessment

The Alaska Science Alternate Assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities is provided by the University of Kansas, Achievement and Assessment Institute. The Science test is based on the Alaska Extended Grade Level Expectations and administered to students in grades 4, 8, and 10.

The Extended Grade Level Expectations (ExGLEs) consist of foundational skills that are linked to the general education content. The content is reduced in complexity to provide entry points to the general education Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) while still providing challenging academic expectations for students with significant cognitive disabilities. The ExGLEs provide a blueprint for the development of the test items for the Alternate Assessment, and the ExGLEs provide guidance to teachers in developing and aligning curriculum and instruction.
