State NAEP.
Beginning in 1990, a state component was added to NAEP. State assessments are administered in reading, mathematics, science, and writing for grades 4 and 8. The state assessments are the same as national NAEP and are administered at the same time in the same schools as the national assessments.
Students.
  • Historically, 40 to 46 states and other jurisdictions have participated in state NAEP assessments. All states but one have participated in state NAEP assessments. View participation map.
  • Reading and mathematics assessments are required every two years beginning in 2003.
  • The new "No Child Left Behind" legislation requires states receiving Title I funds to participate in the biennial reading and mathematics assessments.
  • Science and writing assessments are administered on four-year cycles with science administered in 2005 and writing in 2007.
  • Writing will be administered at 8th grade only in 2005.
