Beginning in 1990,
a state component was added to NAEP. State assessments are administered
in reading, mathematics, science, and writing for grades 4 and 8.
The state assessments are the same as national NAEP and are administered
at the same time in the same schools as the national assessments.
Historically, 40 to 46 states and other jurisdictions
have participated in state NAEP assessments. All states
but one have participated in state NAEP assessments. View
participation map.
Reading and mathematics assessments are required every
two years beginning in 2003.
The new "No Child Left Behind" legislation requires states
receiving Title I funds to participate in the biennial reading
and mathematics assessments.
Science and writing assessments are administered on four-year
cycles with science administered in 2005 and writing in
2007.
Writing will be administered at 8th grade only
in 2005.
