Aleut/Alutiiq Tunic
This is a woman's tunic made of black and red cotton, and white artificial fur in 2" strips. It is machine sewn. Dimensions are: Length 40" Width 30" Traditionally, these tunics were made from sea otter fur. When the Russian American Company began harvesting sea otters in the early 1800s, the Aleut/Alutiiq people were not allowed to wear sea otter. Therefore, tunics were later made from bird skins, typically cormorant. Today, the Kodiak Alutiiq female dancers typically wear tunics made of black and red velvet with white Arctic fox trim.
