Aleut/Alutiiq Beaded Headdress

Description

Beaded headdress made with black and red felt, dentalium shells, shell buttons, and pony beads. Pattern for head cap desighed from ASM paper beaded headdress. Pattern shape was transferred to black felt and cap was sewn from five pieces. Strips of red felt were glued onto black cap. Shell button sewn on top with dentalium shells. radiating from center of cap. Strands of pony beads range from 2" length in the front to 8" length in the back. Dimensions: 12"H x 7"W x 7"D

Aleut/Alutiiq Tunic

Description

This is a woman's tunic made of black and red cotton, and white artificial fur in 2" strips. It is machine sewn. Dimensions are: Length 40" Width 30" Traditionally, these tunics were made from sea otter fur. When the Russian American Company began harvesting sea otters in the early 1800s, the Aleut/Alutiiq people were not allowed to wear sea otter. Therefore, tunics were later made from bird skins, typically cormorant. Today, the Kodiak Alutiiq female dancers typically wear tunics made of black and red velvet with white Arctic fox trim.

Canoe and paddle

Description

Model canoe (a) and paddle 9"L (b) Yakutat style Tlingit canoe. Body of canoe carved from a single piece of unpainted wood, with gunnels and thwarts carved separately. Gunnels carved from thin strips of wood, bent, painted black, and tacked to sides of canoe. Three thwarts glued to inside. Exterior of canoe has a smooth, sanded finish, while inside is roughly carved. 18"L x 5"W x 3 3/4"Tall. Paddle has a long pointed blade and has grip carved into end of handle.
