Students.
As mentioned earlier, NAEP does not report on the performance of individual students. Instead, the assessments are administered to representative samples of students at certain ages or in certain grades in public and private schools.
Assessment results are based on the performance of students in these samples:
  • National assessment samples typically include nearly 10,000 students from 2,000 schools from across the nation
  • State assessment samples include approximately 100 schools and 2,500 to 3,000 students per subject per grade
  • 11,000 schools and 500,000 students participated in the state and national NAEP 2000
  • 14,500 schools and 650,000 students participated in state and national NAEP 2002
  • 15,000 schools and 750,000 students will participate in state and national NAEP 2003
