Background Questionnaires.
While NAEP cannot attribute results to specific causes, NAEP does collect information related to student performance. What factors are related to higher scores? What are the characteristics of those teaching the students? How do schools vary in terms of courses offered? NAEP attempts to answer these questions and others through data collected on background questionnaires. Click the key words for additional information.
Students, teachers, and principals complete questionnaires about student and teacher backgrounds, instructional activities, and school-level practices and policies. Responses are confidential. Results are not reported for individual students, teachers, or schools.

Relating student performance to information from the background questionnaires increases the usefulness of NAEP findings and provides the context for a better understanding of student achievement.
