Unalaska High School Graduates, Unalaska City School District
DEED Spotlight on Unalaska High School Graduates, Unalaska City School District.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected lives worldwide, with some of those most affected being our high school seniors. The class of 2020 is missing many key milestones – attending prom, finishing their last season of high school sports and activities, celebrating their last days of high school, and walking with their graduating class. They won’t have the chance to sign each other’s yearbooks or bid their classmates farewell before embarking on post high school adventures. But, for 35 hardworking graduates in Unalaska, their community tried to make the end of their high school career feel as special as possible.
Earlier this month the Unalaska High School organized a virtual prom – or “Vrom”. The school collaborated with a local DJ to host a prom-themed dance party. Students could join live via Zoom, or watch a live stream of the event on their local cable channel.
Last weekend was graduation day for Unalaska seniors. The graduation was held in three parts to comply with social distancing guidelines, with groups of twenty able to participate at a time. Families and guests were able to watch staff present a diploma to their graduating senior in the decorated Unalaska High School gymnasium. Following the graduation ceremony, everyone gathered in the elementary school parking lot to cheer on a caravan of graduating seniors.
Later in the evening, Unalaska’s local cable network televised a “Tribute to the Graduating Class of 2020.” The video is a touching acknowledgement to the 35 graduating seniors – complete with the graduates walking in their caps and gowns, speeches, scholarship announcements, senior baby photos, and student submitted ‘thank-yous’.
To Unalaska graduates – congratulations on this huge accomplishment!
To Unalaska City School District – thank you for making the end of the year special for your graduating seniors!
