Developing Vocabulary for Administrators
This module explores how students develop vocabulary and its critical role in reading comprehension. Participants will examine the challenges vocabulary poses for English Learners and the difference between academic and social language. The course covers direct and indirect vocabulary instruction, focusing on selecting words, and explicit teaching methods. Additionally, school leaders will learn to use data and observations to guide coaching and professional development for effective vocabulary instruction.
This focus module is part of the Science of Reading for Administrators, PCG course. Each focus module requires separate selection and enrollment; it takes approximately 7 hours to complete and supports professional learning and deeper knowledge of essential reading components. Modules taken as individual units will not qualify for the Alaska Reads Act Endorsement. CEUs are available for participants who complete two or more individual modules.
