Alaska’s Reading Playbook Provides Educators Tangible Tool for Improving Reading Instruction
This week DEED and the Region 16 Comprehensive Center published Alaska’s Reading Playbook: A Practical Guide for Teaching Reading.
The Reading Playbook combines decades of nationwide research with examples and resources developed by educators in Alaska.
Readers will find an introduction to phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The Reading Playbook also contains links to valuable resources where readers can continue to deepen their knowledge.
The Alaska Reading Playbook was put together for educators in Alaska with input from Alaskan teachers. The purpose of the Alaska Reading Playbook is to provide clear, step-by-step examples of evidence-based instructional practices.
Alaska’s unique educational landscape means that we need our own Alaskan playbook that includes both the science behind the strategies as well as specific teaching tools.
The strategies selected for inclusion are engaging and beneficial for our students. DEED and R16CC consulted with educators who are well-versed in Native Alaskan language and culture so that we could tie the rich oral traditions of our Alaskan communities with what we know from research about the acquisition of literacy.
The Region 16 Comprehensive Center will be hosting an introductory session on the Reading Playbook. Registration is now open for sessions on February 16, February 23, or March 3.
