Arctic Village School Teacher Highlighted for Incorporating Hydroponics into STEM Instruction
The growing season for produce is short in Alaska, especially as far north as Arctic Village. Yet that challenge opens the door to learning about alternative agriculture and the STEM principles that make it possible.
Recently, Gabriel Welker, a teacher at Arctic Village School, was highlighted by Green Our Planet for incorporating hydroponics into science and math classes.
“By the end of the class, the students had enough to eat and take home to share with their families,” Gabriel said. “It was a blast to sample all the different varieties of lettuce we had grown and see the students having fun while chomping down on a fresh leaf of lettuce.”
