DEED Spotlight on Bowman Elementary School in Anchorage.
The COVID-19 outbreak changed what school looks like for students across our state, and the nation. Through the uncertainty, teachers are stepping up in creative an innovative ways to ensure students continue to learn!
The educators of Bowman Elementary have risen to the challenge of social distancing during the COVID-19 outbreak, going above and beyond to provide activities for their students at home. Acting fast, they launched resources for students during their extended spring break, and have continued to provide distance learning support as the district transitioned to distance-delivered education.
Here are a few examples of how teachers are staying connected and engaging their students from afar:
- Librarian Shannon Brodie hosts a daily read-aloud on Zoom (even through the weekends!) for primary students and intermediate students.
- Physical Education teachers Sara Paulson and Ryan Olberding launched a YouTube channel with fun and funky daily movement challenges.
- Music teacher Elizabeth Knapp created the Bowman Music website. Ms. Knapp created Music Challenge videos to encourage musical activities, provided musical E-Learning opportunities, and has a page for musical crafts to do at home.
- Art teacher Ashley Austin created Austin’s Art website with student and teacher resources and a link to her YouTube channel with creative projects and art challenges to do at home. She even has a page to showcase her students’ art!
All these resources and more can be found on the Bowman Padlet, a one-stop site of resources available to families.
Thank you, Bowman Elementary educators, for showcasing your creativity and adaptability while students are learning from home!
