Kenai Community Library
The Kenai Community Library (KCL) is now open on a limited basis and is taking precautions to ensure patrons stay safe while utilizing the library services. KCL has equipped circulation desks with plastic shields, returned materials are being quarantined before returning to the collections, and staff are regularly sanitizing high-touch surfaces. Patrons are strongly encouraged to sanitize hands when entering the building and practice social distancing. For now, patrons are asked to limit their visits to 30 minutes of browsing and one-hour of computer use per day. The library is also providing a variety of contactless services so that patrons can enjoy some of the library offerings safely from their homes, such as curbside pickup and virtual programs.
In response to COVID-19, the library implemented a curbside pickup service and “grab bags”. Grab bags are offered for both children and adults, and users can choose their preferred genre and reading level. The library staff will select the books for you – perfect for the reader who enjoys a surprise or isn’t sure what to read next! Grab bags can be picked up via the curbside pickup service, and are accompanied by a special DIY take home pack with a variety of fun projects, such as scratchboards, a sidewalk chalk challenge, an escape room in an envelope, or a local coloring book!
The KCL has always been proud of the quality programming offered to the community. Faced with the restrictions of COVID-19, the staff dusted off a computer for video editing, designated a filming area, brought in a wide assortment of props, art materials, microphones, tripods, and a green screen to help redesign their programming for a digital experience! The library is now offering their events and classes virtually, including Let’s Draw!, Science with Professor Bethany, Lego Club Challenges, Quilting, Snack Wars, watercolor portrait demonstrations, and most recently the summer S.T.E.A.M. program – Junior Explorers Club! The programs are posted on the Library’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
The library traditionally offers a Summer Reading Program in a paper format, complete with a reading log, incentive games/activities, and a sticker chart. This year, in response to COVID-19 the Summer Reading Program moved to a digital platform called Beanstack. The 2020 Digital Summer Reading Program was a collaborative effort with the Alaska State Library, Homer Public Library, and Anchorage Public Library staff. By utilizing the digital platform, the library can continue to offer a robust Summer Reading Program while access to the library remains limited. The digital platform offers a safe way for patrons to participate in the program.
The KCL staff miss their patrons, but understand the importance of reopening in a responsible, safe manner. Until then, they hope their patrons will enjoy the new virtual and curbside services available!
Thank you, KCL, for creating safe and fun summer learning opportunities!
