Students and community leaders ceremoniously break ground on new Houston High School
Thursday students and community leaders ceremoniously broke ground on the new Houston High School in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District.
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Nov. 30, 2018 severely damaged the Houston Middle School. Subsequently, around 380 middle school students were moved next door into the high school’s facilities while the district, school board and borough assembly navigated steps forward.
In 2020, the borough condemned and demolished the middle school building after further analysis.
The new high school will be built on the site of the previous middle school and has been designed to provide more Career and Technical Education opportunities for students.
The building is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. Students who were in the 8th grade at the time of the 2018 earthquake that led to the demolition of their middle school will be the first graduating class at the new high school in May 2023.
