Alaska's Registered Apprenticeship for Teachers
The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program offers aspiring educators an ideal pathway to advance their careers in education.
This "learn-while-you-earn" program combines structured academic instruction with on-the-job learning (OJL) while working in a K-12 classroom under the guidance of a mentor teacher. Apprentices complete their related instruction coursework through their district’s approved Education Preparation Provider (EPP) and upon completion of the program earn a credential to teach in Alaska.

Develop teaching skills under the guidance of a certified mentor teacher.
CERTIFICATION
Upon successful completion, apprentices earn a credential to teach in Alaska.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Be at least 17 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Meet physical requirements established by the employer
- Be eligible to work in an Alaska public school and meet any additional requirements set by the college or training institution
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
- The program typically takes up to four years to complete
- Requires approximately 5,000–6,000 hours of on-the-job learning
- Includes a minimum of 3–4 University courses per year
- Previous relevant experience may allow apprentices to begin at an advanced standing, potentially shortening the required training time
