ELA Core Curriculum (Tier 1) Grants
When is it time to evaluate the strength of your district's ELA Tier 1 core program? Tier 1 is evidence-based core instruction that all students receive in the classroom. This core instruction should meet the needs of most of the student population. The strength of an ELA Tier 1 core program should be sufficient for 80% of the student population to achieve grade-level goals. The purpose of instruction at the Tier 1 level is to prevent the development of academic difficulties and to reduce the need for additional support at Tier 2 and Tier 3 levels. When less than 80% of students are identified as proficient readers at their grade level expectations, it is time to evaluate the strength of the ELA Tier 1 program. The saying "You can't intervene your way out of a Tier 1 problem" describes the need to improve reading for all students by providing strong core instruction.
DEED developed a grant program to provide leadership and support to Alaska districts to ensure that all elementary classrooms are equipped with Tier 1 core ELA materials aligned to state standards and the guidance outlined in the Reads Act. This one-year grant supports an additional 48.7% of Alaskan students bringing evidence-based and science of reading core materials into their classrooms. Beginning Fall of 2023, professional learning communities will bring together educators utilizing the same curricula programs to establish communities of practice to collaborate, problem solve and support each other as we all support the students of Alaska to become proficient readers.
