DEED Spotlight on Teachers: Katie Koski, Grade 2, Riverbend Elementary in Juneau
Students arrive in Ms. Koski’s classroom with a wide range of reading abilities – from learning the sounds of letters, to emerging readers. In addition to teaching fundamental literacy skills, Ms. Koski’s role is to inspire and foster a love of reading for all students at their ability level. She feels it is just as important for students to see reading as an academic tool, as it is for students to find enjoyment in reading.
Ms. Koski hosts monthly reading challenges and book talks, stocks a library full of interesting and relevant books, assigns student book reviews, and schedules daily read-aloud time.
As an educator in the Artful Teaching community, she also integrates the arts into reading as much as possible. At the end of each week students demonstrate their understanding of the weekly reading theme through the creation of a “Tableau” – a still picture made with their bodies that silently communicates a concept from their reading.
Thank you, Ms. Koski, for your creativity in inspiring young readers!
