State Board Chair

James Fields, of Glennallen, was elected Chair of the State Board of Education & Early Development on June 5, 2015. Fields, who holds the seat for a representative of Regional Educational Attendance Areas, joined the board on March 22, 2013. His term expires March 1, 2018.

Mr. Fields grew up in small business, with his family building, owning, and operating rental properties in Oregon. He attended college for three years to take courses relevant to small business. He started and ran a construction company in Salem, Oregon. In 2002 Fields moved to Alaska, operated a business, and built apartments and a grocery store building in Glennallen.

Mr. Fields is involved in his community as a high school boys basketball coach and President of the Copper River School Board since 2008.
