Alaska Native Language Arts K-3 Reading Standards
The Department of Education and Early Development, Office of Tribal Affairs, has collaborated with the Sealaska Heritage Institute and TIDES Education Associates to create Alaska Native Language Arts K-3 Reading Standards (ANLARS) for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. These standards have been adopted by the Alaska State Board of Education and will play a crucial role in supporting the instruction of Alaska Native languages. By establishing these standards, it will be clear that reading in Alaska Native languages is a valid way to demonstrate K-3rd grade reading proficiency.
Additionally, these standards will work alongside the Literacy Screeners for Alaska Indigenous Languages (LSAIL) Project to develop literacy screeners for Alaska Native Languages. For more information click here.
